The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in partnership with Art Production Fund, is pleased to announce P3Studio artists-in-residence Patterson Beckwith and Amy Gartrell. In Colorphilia, the artists invite guests to take part in a variety of color-related experiments and activities in their color laboratory. Designed to explore the many ways color affects us, Colorphilia will demonstrate how color can be both a subjective experience and an objective feature in the world.
Guests will have an opportunity to learn about color, its meaning and personal associations through a number of different mediums and mechanisms from workshops in color theory and color mixing to private colortherapy sessions, color perception surveys and color portraits. One of the exercises, referred to as a “tetrachromat survey,” allows guests to test how well they perceive shades of color and discover if they are one of the rarepeople with four color receptors (versus the norm of three), allowing them to see millions more hues than the average person.
In color theory and color mixing workshops, guests will see firsthand how colors impact each other—what happens when colored paints are combined and how does our perception of one color change by simply placing it next to another. Guests may also take part in a private “color therapy session” with Gartrell or have their portrait taken by Beckwith using a striking chromatic clash technique. For those who wish to only observe, Beckwith and Gartrell will be working on a variety of color theory projectsthroughout their residency ranging from still life photography to found object sculpture and collage that explore seemingly opposing color relationships.
Patterson Beckwith lives and works in New York and received a Bachelor’s of Fine Art from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. He went on to get his Master’s of Fine Art in photography from the University of California at Los Angeles. He has created portrait studio events at the Aspen Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, Greene Naftali Gallery, New York and Spruth Magers, Munich along with Ooga Booga and the Hammer Museum, both in Los Angeles.
Amy Gartrell is a New York-based artist whose work can be described as simultaneously macabre and sentimental, reflecting the complexities, confusion and drama of adolescence. She has had solo exhibitions at La Panaderia, Mexico City and Daniel Reich Gallery, New York in addition to participating in numerous group shows, such as Fight or Flight at The Whitney Museum of American Art and Hiding in the Light at Mary Boone Gallery, New York. Gartrell has work in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington.
The P3Studio artist-in-residence program at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas represents one component of its larger art program, in which artists create projects that are interactive and participatory, giving guests the opportunity to connect at an authentic and personal level. Developed and curated in partnership with Art Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to producing ambitious public art projects, it strives to reach new audiences and expand awareness through contemporary art.
