The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in partnership with Art Production Fund, is pleased to announce P3Studio artist-in-residence Lucky DeBellevue. The ideas of collaboration and exchange come to life both implicitly and explicitly in DeBellevue’s work as he invites guests to participate in two independent, yet thematically-linked projects.

Exemplified by his choice of medium for his first P3Studio project—silver chenille stems (commonly known as pipe cleaners)—DeBellevue describes his approach to art as egalitarian, putting “low art” materials in a “high art” context, turning ordinary crafts into something inventive and experimental. DeBellevue will weave the chenille stems into a simple yet striking wedge sculpture and invite guests to assist him in creating an ever-growing collection of woven sculptures.

For his second piece, a large, wall-based block print, guests will also take on an interactive role in the creative process, designing and arranging shapes that DeBellevue will ink and turn into a printed piece. Then, DeBellevue will create a second print that echoes the layout of the first, a test of memory and a performance in placement. Guests will be given the first print to keep while the second will be placed on the studio wall to document the collaboration.

Originally from Louisiana, Lucky DeBellevue is a New York-based artist described by The New York Times as “quietly inventive and brilliantly economical.” He earned his reputation through his original use of inconsequential materials in the creation of abstract sculptures and is currently shifting focus to paintings and prints, yet still employs the use of simple, non-traditional materials. He is represented by Kai Matsumiya in New York and has participated in solo and group exhibitions across the U.S. and around the world. The projects he has chosen for his residency at The Cosmopolitan demonstrate the techniques he showcased in acclaimed installations at the Whitney Museum at Philip Morris and Kai Matsumiya. Following his P3Studio residency, DeBellevue will present solo exhibitions at NADA New York and Hacienda in Zurich, Switzerland.

The P3Studio artist-in-residence program at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas represents one component of its larger art program, in which artists create projects that are interactive and participatory, giving guests the opportunity to connect at an authentic and personal level. Developed and curated in partnership with Art Production Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to producing ambitious public art projects, it strives to reach new audiences and expand awareness through contemporary art.
