DREW HEITZLER: STANDARD PROJECTION
Press Release
On display at The Standard, Hollywood is Drew Heitzler's Spiral Jetty Crystal Voyager Region Centrale (Bootlegged, Re-Ordered, Combined, Sometimes More, Sometimes Less), 2011 and Observations on a Bowl of Fruit - Bananas, 2010. For the latter, as the title suggests, Heitzler re-edited bootlegged video versions of three films to create unique lenses through which the viewer gets a new perspective on each or the original films. As they are screened simultaneously side by side, the viewer is subject to their unexpected synchronicities. Observations on a Bowl of Fruit – Bananas, a collaboration with experimental film artist Amy Granat, rearranges and reimagines films from early 1960’s LA to create a narrative that confuses the order of the past and reveals hidden elements of the culture.
The Standard, Downtown LA is featuring Sailors, Mermaids, Mystics. for Kustomizers, Grinders, Fender-men. for Fools, Addicts, Woodworkers and Hustlers. (Doubled), 2009 and Punch Film (Larry’s Last Party), 2008. In the first work, Heitzler uses three 60s films (The Wild Ride, Night Tide and Lilith) to create a hypnotic layered triptych of abstract narratives that utilizes the impact of the oil industry on the US as a metaphor for social politics. The second piece presents another split screen short on an infinite loop pairing 16 mm and Super-8 film, with the left side featuring hole-punched film frames, a reflection of Heitzler’s fascination with transferring information from analog to digital.
Drew Heitzler, an LA-based artist with Blum and Poe, has had his work featured at PS1, LA ART, The Whitney, and MOCA.
