Melissa Joseph’s Art Sundae Children’s Workshop at Rockefeller Center

On May 04, 2024, Melissa Joseph lead a children's art-making workshop inspired by her current Art In Focus exhibition at 10 Rockefeller Plaza from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm.

Inspired by the artist’s archival imagery, found objects, and felted scenes found throughout Rockefeller Center, children had the opportunity to create colorful felted creations alongside the artist and place their work within a larger installation window at 10 Rockefeller Plaza.

Centered in heartfelt storytelling, Joseph's process of felting, compressing, blending, and bonding wool fibers together seamlessly mirrors her personal journey as a bi-racial individual, navigating the in-between spaces of her diverse cultural heritage and diaspora. Exploring personal and societal narratives, Joseph's practice invites viewers to connect with the profound and the forgotten.

Art Sundae is an ongoing public program launched by non-profit Art Production Fund and New York gallery Fort Gansevoort that is designed to build confidence in children through art-making. This free program allows children to work with a contemporary artist to create a public art project. The program is designed to be accessible to all and highlight art's positive impact across all communities.

Huge thanks to APF Board Member Claire Chan and The Chan Family Foundation, along with Matthew Villarreal from Parsons School of Design, for supporting the creation and distribution of free lesson guides to complement Melissa Joseph’s Art Sundae workshop.
